Stocking Up for China

You might be wondering what someone's house would look like if they were planning to move to China really, really soon. Well, I can tell you, the answer is... somewhat of a disaster. It sort of looks like a tornado blew through my house. As if this house wasn't small enough already, we also have a ton of stuff we are collecting & stocking up on so we can bring it to China with us. As a person who is really particular about my products, you can bet I've been stocking up on certain things! My husband keeps reminding me that we are not moving to Mars.... but, I have friends in China whose Sephora orders have been returned and who have found it to be really expensive to buy anything that is foreign and makeup related. I'm not taking any chances.

The closets in this place are way too small. Let this be a warning - when moving into a new place, don't just look at square feet - look at closet space! I apparently wasn't thinking when we moved into this place... our condo in San Diego was smaller than this place, but with much better storage space and walk-in closets. Since we've moved here, the second bedroom has doubled as my closet. Now, its our moving-to-China storage room.

So what's on my must-bring-to-China-with-me packing list?

Apparently - 300 pounds of tampons and other feminine products. LOL. We are also bringing some snacks - Cliff Bars, Zone Bars, Power Bars, granola bars... if you know me, you know I am a monster when I am hungry. To spare my husband and anyone else we travel with, we decided it would be a good idea to have some of these bars on us at all times, just in case!

You might also spy a Kerastase bag and an Aveda bag - which means, yep, you guessed it, I am bringing some of my coveted shampoo & conditioner with me! Can you blame me?! With dyed blonde hair, quality shampoo & conditioner is key! Friends have also told me that these foreign brands of hair products are also extremely expensive there. There are also a lot of limitations on shipping liquids into the country, so I am going to bring as much as I can with me during our move.

BTW I haven't actually tried the Kerastase green line yet, but comes highly recommend by some Fashion & Beauty Nesties, and I can't wait to try it! I also bought an item from the pink line - Chroma Thermique - its supposed to be really great for color treated hair, very nourishing, and also gives amazing shine.

In this you see my Mac sheer pressed powder, Makeup Forever HD Foundation, various DDF cleansers that I love to use, my La Roche Posay daily moisturizer that I've already blogged about, and my go-to dry shampoo by Oscar Blandi. To sidetrack a little bit - I love this Oscar Blandi dry shampoo. This small container is only 11 dollars, and I've had it since December and have used it about 3 times a week since then. I still have over half left. This not only takes away oiliness, but it also adds volume for that just-washed look. I love this stuff!

And finally, the really fun stuff...

Various over the counter medicines, primarily including, as you can see, medicine for GI discomfort! I hear while in China, Immodium is your friend, at least for the first few weeks.... haha。。。免得措手不及!

I know once I am there, I may look back at all this and laugh... but, maybe not!

I have some really great MAC products to RAVE about really soon!

Thanks for reading -

Steph

  6. I love that I am not the only one who is stocking up before a foreign adventure! I am jealous you get to take a bunch of things...my husband and I are traveling for a year and living out of a backpack, so I had to make my choices VERY carefully.

  7. Amy, that is AMAZING. If we could do that, we totally would! My husband, being in the military, has a commitment so we aren't able to do something like that anytime soon. But, seriously - awesome! I am envious! you are going to have such an amazing time. We were just talking about that over breakfast actually - if we could sell everything we own right now and travel for a year, we would. Like nomads! LOL. I love it.

  8. I just found this blog and its AWESOME!!! Where are you moving to in China...Beijing? I used to live in Shanghai and they have a lot of what you are taking. Obviously NOT tampons...hahaha..but there is a Sephora on every block it seems like with awesome things. I lived there for 5 years and found that you could find just about ANYTHING there. Especially in Beijing if that's where you are headed. You will have a BLAST!!! I am DYING to move back there!

  9. Oh my gosh there is a Sephora in CHINA? WHO KNEW?!!! Not me! LOL
Kel - you rock. There are apparently a TON of Sephoras in Beijing! I had no idea. There is still the price factor - my friend who is from Beijing said that foreign makeup is really ridiculously priced there. But I have a friend who lives there now and has lived there for a year, she told me her Sephora package from Sephora.com was turned away and she was refunded - I wonder if she knows there are Sephoras there?!! I'm going to let her know. She has lived there a year already so I bet she knows, I wonder if its the price factor or wrong skin tone or something for the reason why she ordered from sephora.com. Hmmm! definitely going to ask her.

Yeah my friends living there told me to definitely bring tampons! lol.

Why did you live there Kel? How cool!! I'm so glad you enjoyed your time there!

Thanks for the kind comments, I leave in early May for Beijing, I hope you will follow the blog and stay in touch!

  18. Hey Steph....I also meant to tell you that you can buy Kerastase products there. In fact, a TON of ordinary hair places have the product. In Shanghai they have Tony and Guy (I bet they have one in Beijing)...and they sell it there too. My husband and I worked for a non-profit for a while and just LOVED it in the city. check out my blog... www.joshandkel.com. If you go back to the beginning of my blog (like 2008) you can see pics of the city we lived in. Anyway, I have added you to my blog "stalking" list and will surely keep in touch friend.

  19. Kel - I mentioned the Sephora thing to my friend who is there now and she said the prices are 3-4x greater than the Sephora in the US! Crazy huh? She also said they carry a lot of different products than we do, example, a lot of whitening creams - interesting huh? There is a Tony & Guy in Beijing, and there is another salon I've been looking into that is owned by foreigners, too, so I am glad, at least I know & won't buy anymore hair products here.

I am really interested in your experience in Shanghai and will check out your blog! We plan to go to Shanghai in August for the World Expo.

  20. Hey Steph! yeah, we were there when they STARTED planning the world expo..wish I could see the finishing touches. I'll keep an eye on your blog just in case you post some pics. I have tons of friends who still live in China, so... My sister's sister in law lives up north...she teaches english as a second language and LOVES it. but she lives in the middle of nowhere...like REAL china. :) hahahhaa. we lived in the city and found it to be soo modern. At least in Beijing you have old mixed with new. In Shanghai....almost all the old has been replaced with new. :( Still...I LOVED it. Why are you moving there? If you need any suggestions on places to go in Shanghai...just let me know. There is a place called 1221. I think that is the address too, but you can find it in any Shanghai guide. It is AWESOME chinese food. It's where all the foreigners go to get really GOOD chinese food...not just hole in the wall chinese food. SOOO good. mmmm... Anyway, I have lots more places to tell you about in Shanghai, but I can wait until you get closer to your trip there for sure. ;)

    have a good day!

  21. Kel - check out my first post and then the next one that says Why China? On the right side of the main page you'll find them, its only a few back since I only started blogging about 2-3 weeks ago.

We are going to do a lot of traveling when we are there, we plan to go to the rural villages... we want to see every province! And I am going to be posting a ton of pictures once I am there. Right now this is mainly fashion/beauty related as you can tell, but, once I am in China it will be travel heavy!

  22. Hey Steph! I just ordered the Kerastase Bain de Force Shampoo after seeing it here. I have used the "pink" line before when I was a blonde and really liked it. So, since I'm bleaching my hair again :/ I thought I would give "green" a try! You have such discipline to not crack those bad boys open and try them before you go :)

  23. OMG! I'd love to VISIT China! But you live there?! GOSHERS! What a huge change of environment!
